On June 29th, 2019 , Algeria TechWomen &TechGirls Alumnae met in Algiers for the 1st edition of Alumnae Summit. The event was hosted by World Learning Algeria STEM Center and sponsored by Legacy International. 21 fellows (14 TechWomen and 7 TechGirls) attended the summit to launch officially Techwomen TechGirls Algeria Club. It was a day full of activities.
The event started with a networking session where alumnae community and guests had coffee together and introduce themselves and talk about their activities to each other.
The welcoming speech was given by Ouafa Ben Terki where she recalls the motivation behind the TW-TG-DZ Club to be:
"TechWomen Techgirls DZ club is founded to build support system between alumnae. To amplify the positive impact in Algeria, we need to build bridge between TechWomen & Techgirls Algerian fellows. It’s important to get involved and stay connected to the community. In order to grow, there are a lot of opportunities to explore and make Algeria present everywhere"
Then,the event guest Mrs. Karen Rose , besides being the spouse of US Ambassador to Algeria, she is a professional in Information & Technology give a presentation on Internet Community Organizations. According to her
"We get involved in Internet community through following organizations activities, attending training and conferences either remotely or in person and sharing our experience.Karen gave examples of organizations providing opportunities: Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), Africa Network Operators Group (AfNOG) ,African Internet Summit (AIS) ,Internet Governance Forum (IGF) ,Internet Society (ISOC),African Peering and Interconnection Forum (AfPif) ,AfriNIC and AfChic"
Following Karen’s talk , Fatima Zohra Benhamida Introduced TechWomen to the attendees .
She talked about the program activities : Mentorship Project ,Impact Project and Cultural events. Fatima closed her presentation by showing the ideal profile for this program.
After Fatima’s presentation , Hadil Diaf and Maram Mahmoudi shared the stage to talk about TechGirls program and their experience in Virginia Tech Lab and cultural activities during their TechGirls journey.
The fourth presentation was given by Nassima Berrayah to talk about alumnae community and previous undertaken activities that. She reminds the TechWomen and TechGirls community from 2011 to 2018 reached 65 members from 16 states,
She emphasizes that many alumnae have been involved in many activities empowering women in STEM in different events such as: DZ Women In Technology 2013 ,Startup Weekend Women 2013, 2014, 2018; Social Media Camp 2019, Empowering Techies 2019.
"The main goal of the summit is gathering alumnae community under a same roof to exchange experiences and explore different opportunities to collaborate and grow together as Helen Keller’s Quote "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much."
The morning presentation were followed by a panel discussion. The panelists Ouafa Ben Terki , Fatima Zohra Benhamida , Hadil Diaf , Nassima Berrayah and Maram Mahmoudi answered participants’ questions regarding their challenges after exchange program and how they can support each other through club activities .
After a lunch break, the afternoon session were organized as workshops around tables where 3 to 4 participants joined a table to discuss one of the following topics: Mentorship, TechWomen TechGirls Empowerment, Entrepreneurship, Academic Field and Industry Field moderated respectively by Nassima Berrayah ,Amel Chenouf, Ouafa Ben Terki , Fatima Zohra Benhamida and Salma Bekkouche.
By the end of the day, each moderator went to the stage to present the flipchart of brainstorming done by the participants.
In Mentorship table, alumnae suggested to implement TechWomen TechGirls Mentorship Program and include predeparture orientation for new TechWomen TechGirls in the core of club activities.
In TechWomen TechGirls Empowerment table, alumnae expressed their needs to have training in soft skills like teamwork, public speaking, communication, self-confidence and self-esteem.
In Entrepreneurship table, alumnae talked about their lack of experience in building startups. Participants expressed their motivation to learn more about entrepreneurship ecosystem in Algeria.
In Academic Field table, TechGirls Alumna expressed their needs to know more about existing field to pursue their studies in Algeria how they can benefit from online learning opportunities.
In Industry Field, TechGirls Alumna expressed their needs in orientation to write their CVs, prepare their job interviews, and get their first internship or job opportunity, how to brand themselves on social media. TechWomen Alumna discussed how to overcome challenges that Algerian women meet in STEM filed and professional world.
This summit was an opportunity to explore what alumnae community can do together to leverage their positive impact .The next action is prioritizing ideas that can be implemented as soon as possible.
